TRAVEL FAQ'S

Santa Maria is at the tip of the peninsula of Maputo that stretches 38 kms from Maputo. The Inhaca and Portuguese Islands lie just offshore and the area is a nature reserve. You have two options to get to the lodge - boat or 4x4.

When you’ve come through the Maputo border, drive to the Maputo Special Reserve, (Futi Gate – gate closes at 18:00). Follow the electricity line through the Reserve to Santa Maria. When you exit the reserve, follow Google Maps to Bemugi’s Place, where you can park your car. (Google Map coordinates:  -26.093525, 32.950040).

Yes. The road can be rough and strictly requires a 4×4.

It’s a beautiful drive through the Maputo Elephant Reserve. It does pose some challenges as it requires a 4×4 and has very little signal. 

Get your Google Maps started whilst you still have signal – that way, if you lose signal, it should still continue to guide you through. If you get lost, it’s advised to follow the electrical lines through to Santa Maria.

If you opt to drive, please note that the reserve gates close 30 minutes before sunset and open at sunrise, so please plan accordingly.

If you opt to take a charter, please consult with your charter company as boat times are sttrictly tide dependant.

Upon arrival, you can park at Bemugis Place for a small daily fee. 

You can either take a boat from the Maputo Marina or Drive by 4×4 through the Elephant Reserve.

  • Driving through the Elephant Reserve is an option for those up for the drive. It takes between 4-5 hours and is only accessible with a 4×4 vehicle. Learn more about the Reserve here
  • The boat transfer departs from the Maputo Marina and is approximately 70 minutes long.
    There is usually only one scheduled boat booked per day, which is reliant both upon the tide and upon the flights of other guests expected to arrive/depart that day.

There is a lovely restaurant at the Maputo Marina, within walking distance, where you can swim, have a drink or a bite to eat.
